Malaria is a leading health issue in Ethiopia, where an estimated 48 million (68 percent of the population) live in areas at risk of malaria. Malaria transmission in Ethiopia is unstable and is characterized by frequent and often large-scale epidemics. Malaria is prevalent in 75 per cent of the country, putting over 50 million people at risk (out of a countrywide population of 77 million).
The global community aims to achieve universal access to life-saving prevention and treatment measures in Africa to save millions of lives by December 31, 2010. Long-lasting insecticide-treated nets (LLINs) and indoor residual room spraying with insecticides are two very effective prevention methods to knock out deaths due to malaria. Treatment is also an important component. All Africans should have access to safe and effective malaria treatments in the event of a malaria infection.
