About Our Work in Mali

Getting the Nets Out

Given the enormous amount of work required to reach the 2010 target of universal mosquito net coverage in Africa, Malaria No More is helping equip countries with the knowledge and skills to plan early and realistically for achievement of results. In partnership with the Alliance for Malaria Prevention (AMP), Malaria No More is funding training workshops for the National Malaria Control Programs (NMCPs) of 18 countries to effectively scale-up net coverage. Mali is one of these countries, and its capital city is playing host to a training workshop for 10 French-speaking African countries during the week of April 6th.

This training workshop will support Burundi, Central African Republic, Cameroon, Comoros, Congo, Guinea, Madagascar, Mali, Rwanda and Senegal in the implementation of mass net distribution including development of Plans of Action and budgets, planning and logistics operations, supportive communications strategies and monitoring and evaluation. One key element of the workshop is a discussion on maintaining gains in net coverage and utilization. During the workshop, malaria control program staff will revise their country's Plan of Action and more clearly define technical support needs going forward.

Distributing Nets with FC Barcelona

Building upon our relationship with the world-renowned soccer team FC Barcelona, Malaria No More attended the launch of their XICS Center (International Network of Solidarity Centers) in Bamako, Mali in March 2009. XICS Centers provide outreach to children in the local community by linking sport, education and health. Thanks to funds raised through the More Than A Club: Kick it to Malaria partnership, MNM and FC Barcelona—including FCB President Joan LaPorta and Malian player Seydou Keita—were able to distribute 1,000 mosquito nets to local kids. The Bamako XICS Center will also help to educate the community about the importance of sleeping under nets to protect themselves from malaria.

December 2007

In December 2007, Malaria No More distributed 165,000 mosquito nets in Mali, joining the Mali Ministry of Health, the Measles Initiative and other partner organizations in an integrated measles-malaria campaign that distributed a total of 2.2 million nets. Children under the age of five received mosquito nets, a measles vaccine, polio vaccine, and Vitamin A supplements. This campaign highlights Malaria No More's continued drive to engage in, and promote, collaborative campaigns that take advantage of shared resources and maximize the potential public health benefits. As a result of this integrated health intervention campaign, 85% of children under the age of five in Mali received an insecticide-treated net.
