Why Support Malaria No More?

A contribution to Malaria No More is an investment in our bold but achievable goal: to cover everyone at risk of malaria in Africa with a mosquito net by the end of 2010 and to end malaria deaths by 2015.

Why Malaria?

Malaria kills more children in Africa than any other single disease—one child every 30 seconds—but it doesn't have to be this way. Malaria is preventable and treatable.

Why Now?

Thanks to a new generation of effective nets and medicines, plus on-the-ground successes, increased political will and significant new funding commitments, the world is better prepared to defeat this deadly disease today than any other time in history. Malaria's moment is now.

Why Us?

Malaria No More works to maximize results in the race to save lives by leveraging every opportunity to end malaria deaths as quickly and effectively as possible. We make high-yield investments of time and capital to speed progress, unlock resources, mobilize new assets and spur the world toward reaching this goal.

What are the Benefits of Investing in Anti-Malaria Efforts?

An investment in malaria control in Africa produces impressive results. For example, Ethiopia, Rwanda and Eritrea have all reduced malaria deaths by more than 50% in just a few years by using proven interventions like mosquito nets and medicines; the Islands of Zanzibar have nearly eliminated deaths; and Tanzania has launched a campaign to cover every child under five with a mosquito net by the end of 2009.

Malaria is a preventable disease. By providing necessary tools and ensuring that they're used correctly, the lives nearly one million children who would otherwise fall victim to malaria each year will be saved. An end to malaria will free vital resources to address other health and development issues. Removing malaria as an obstacle to productivity will spur economic growth and help reduce poverty. Ending malaria will make a huge difference in the lives of families, communities and entire countries.

In working to achieve our goal, Malaria No More focuses on ensuring that the necessary tools to defeat malaria are widely available and used effectively to save as many lives as possible.

What Has Malaria No More Accomplished?

Since its founding in December 2006, Malaria No More has taken on key initiatives to raise awareness and promote malaria control:

  • We made direct investments to help mobilize 15 million nets to protect 30 million African mothers and children from malaria.
  • The Malaria No More Policy Center, the only group in Washington DC committed exclusively to malaria, launched in January 2008 to support malaria legislation on Capitol Hill.
  • We raised malaria awareness by engaging millions of Americans through partnerships with American Idol and the American Youth Soccer Organization, and with the support of celebrities including Will Smith, Jordin Sparks, Kiefer Sutherland, Forest Whitaker and others.
  • We co-hosted the 2008 MDG Malaria Summit at the United Nations, convening world leaders in health, government and business to announce more than $3 billion in new funding for the fight against malaria and launch the Global Malaria Action Plan.
  • We worked with governments in the U.S. and the U.K. to secure a 100 million mosquito net commitment from the G8 during their 2008 Summit.
  • And much more! For a full briefing of our activities, see our 2008 Stakeholder Report.
