Malaria No More Contribution: 128,000 nets: MNM secured a contribution of 110,000 mosquito nets from Sumitomo and provided an additional 18,000 nets plus funding for the distribution, logistics, and social mobilization activities surrounding the total 128,000 net contribution.

Big Picture

In October 2007, Malaria No More joined the Madagascar Ministry of Health, Sumitomo, the Alliance for Malaria Prevention and other partner organizations in an integrated health intervention campaign that distributed a total of 1.4 million nets to children under the age of five and pregnant women. Children under-five received mosquito nets, de-worming medication, Vitamin A and a measles vaccination.

Results

  • In districts where nets were distributed during the campaign, 90% of households with an under-five child had at least one net.
  • Nationally, the campaign brought the net coverage rate to 59.2%, and 70.5% in endemic areas.
  • The net use rate in districts where nets were distributed during the campaign was 80.8% for children under 5.
  • The net use rate in districts where nets were distributed during the campaign was 68.5% for pregnant women, while the national net use rate for pregnant women was 49.2%, and 62.2% in endemic areas.
