In October of 2009, students of Cornerstone Schools in Washington, DC dedicated a week to raising awareness for malaria with educational activities focused on malaria and a friendly competition between classes to see which homerooms could raise the most money to fight malaria. The prize? A chance to serve their principal a slice of humble pie...in the face!
The Malaria Policy Center's own Wendy Taylor visited some of the participating classes to teach students about the importance of fighting malaria a world away and what they could do to help the fight. She also taught students about lifesaving mosquito nets and how they could help protect a family from malaria by raising money to buy nets - further fueling the friendly rivalry.
At the end of the week, donation amounts were tallied (the school raised over $300 for Malaria No More!) and the two classes that raised the most money were rewarded with sweet revenge on their principal! A truly delicious treat for this next generation of malaria advocates!
