The 2010 edition of the "World Briefing: Telling the Malaria Story" contest is underway!

Judging:

Judges will rank the submissions based on the following criteria:

  • Does the entry explain why potential readers in the student's home community/country should care about malaria?
  • Does the entry illustrate a fresh perspective/unique angle about what he/she can bring to the global effort to end malaria deaths?
  • Does the entry explain how the trip to Africa will enhance his/her knowledge of the malaria burden?
  • Does the entry explain how he/she will use the experience to educate/encourage others to join the fight against malaria?
  • Is the entry concise and easy-to-read?
  • Is the entry well-written?

Starting Wednesday, September 9 through Monday, September 21, the Sponsors will post the top submissions here--get your friends, family, and anyone interested in the malaria fight to vote for their favorite Tweets and statements to determine the finalists. A task force of the following judges will determine the grand prize winner to be announced the week of September 21st.

In 2006, Scott joined the Malaria No More team to inspire individuals and institutions in the private sector to end deaths caused by malaria. Prior to joining Malaria No More he was a founding partner of Priceline.com, the "Name Your Own Price" Internet service. After Malaria No More's involvement in the Twitter campaign in April 2009, he talked to AdAge about how to "market" the end of a global disease in "Marketing and Media Lessons From Twittermania".

Executive Vice President, Malaria Initiatives at Novartis

Mr. Gabriel is Executive Vice President and General Manager of the Malaria Initiatives program at Novartis. Mr. Gabriel manages all aspects of the antimalarial drug Coartem, ranging from development, production and supply to marketing and life cycle management. Mr. Gabriel is also responsible for collaborating with external stakeholders to ensure adequate supply of Coartem to patients in malaria-endemic regions. Prior, Mr. Gabriel served as Head of Novartis Pharma - Region Europe which included Africa and the Middle East.

Andrew Jack has been a journalist for the Financial Times since 1990. He currently writes about health and pharmaceuticals, based in London. He was the paper's Moscow correspondent and then bureau chief in 1998-2004, and previously Paris correspondent, financial correspondent, general reporter and corporate reporter. He is author of Inside Putin's Russia and The French Exception. Mr. Jack recently reported on malaria in the April 2009 Financial Times Special Report, "Combating Malaria".

DR. NATHAN MULURE

Dr. Nathan Mulure is the Africa Operations Manager of the Malaria Initiatives program at Novartis. Dr. Mulure has been involved in the clinical trials that led to the development of Coartem Dispersible as well as various access-to-medicine and healthcare worker training programs. As a medical doctor, Dr. Mulure also acts in an advisory role for key opinion leaders and medical practitioners throughout Africa. Prior, Dr. Mulure served as a Medical Advisor at Novartis.
