High School Students Dance to Save Lives!
Stayin' Alive was conceived of by a group of entrepreneurial high school students in Melbourne, Florida as a simple but effective means to fight malaria. Dedicating their '07 Valentine's Day Dance to Malaria No More, the students raise $1,600 to support the fight against malarial mosquitoes and save lives.
Inspired by their efforts, Malaria No More is taking the program nationwide for the 2007-2008 school year! By dedicating a dance, or series of dances to Malaria No More and committing to a $1,000 donation from the proceeds, your school can play a significant role in eradicating malaria. Here's your chance to save lives and make a difference on a global scale..., and all you have to do is dance! Lily's Lemonade Stand: 6-year-old Embraces the Cause
May 18, 2007
Proud Parents Share Lily's Story
Just a quick note to let you know that our six-year-old daughter, Lily, sponsored a lemonade stand to raise money for bed nets this weekend. She raised $200! We just made the donation online.
We found out about your organization from the Laura Bush interview on NPR's "News & Notes" program. We shared the "For Kids" section of your website with Lily and she immediately wanted to take action. When she gets her allowance, she divides it into three banks: one for saving, one for spending and one for donating. Originally she was just going to empty out her donation bank, but when she read the suggestions for kids she set her mind on a lemonade stand. The response to her efforts was amazing!
She is very proud of her accomplishment, but more importantly she has a deep concern for other children on the other side of the world who are at risk for contracting malaria. Thank you for all of your efforts on their behalf!
Sincerely,
Jennifer and Brandon J.
University of Alabama Students Raise $2,800 to Fight Malaria
Inspired by Dr. Karen Starks and Dr. Jeffery Sach's book, "The End of Poverty," graduate students at the University of Alabama School of Social Work established a class project to raise money for Malaria No More. The students developed a plan to educate the local community about malaria and raise money through several easy and engaging events during the fall semester. For the first event, students organized a traditional spaghetti luncheon, while the second event brought local community participants together for a rousing signing event at a local Karaoke club. The students also generated funds through outreach to their networks of family, classmates, friends, faculty, church members and civic organizations. All told, the students raised $2,800 for Malaria No More, but more importantly they found ways to pair fun events with a great cause, and in the process of doing so, brought needed attention to a very serious international health problem.
Boys and Girls Club of the Gulf Coast: Malaria No More Walk for Kids
In an inspiring act of compassion, kids from the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Gulf Coast Pass Christian Unit paid tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by sponsoring a "Malaria No More" Walk for Kids to raise funds to purchase bed nets for children in Africa. The Pass Club kids, living in FEMA trailers after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, raise $950 on behalf of Malaria No More. When asked why the clubs scheduled the Malaria Walk on Martin Luther King Day, Jackie McGee, Pass Christian Club Director said, "I wanted the kids to experience having the initiative to help someone else ... it was a holiday for us and I wanted it to be a 'day on' on our 'day off' ... to feel compassion for others. It was a walk for kids, all kids." Thirteen year old Kiarra Dedeaux referring to children effected by malaria, added, "We don't need any children dead from a disease; those kids want to reach their goals just like we do."

F.O.O.T.S.T.E.P.S - Music to End Malaria Initiative
Utilizing what F.O.O.T.S.T.E.P.S founder and Emory University student Rohit Malhotra calls the "universal language" of music, Music to End Malaria was created to get college students involved in the fight against the disease. More than 50 colleges and universities around the country have signed on to raise money to fight this worldwide killer. In the lead up to the first Malaria Awareness Day on April 25, campuses will organize bed net demonstrations, T-shirt sales, BBsQuito cookouts, film screenings, festivals, informational sessions with public health experts, and more. Joining with major recording artists, Music to End Malaria will culminate with awareness-raising concerts on campuses in Atlanta (April 25), Geneva, NY (April 28), and New York City (April 30). Students across the country who have donated $20 through the Music to End Malaria website (www.musictoendmalaria.org) or the purchase of Music to End Malaria T-shirts sold on campuses will receive a ticket to these concerts.
