New York, NEW YORK - Musician and performer G. Love is known for entertaining crowds of thousands with his live music, but this summer he has been playing to a different tune: working to rid the world of malaria. G. Love has partnered with Malaria No More, a non-profit organization working to end malaria deaths in Africa, to spread the word about a global killer and empower audiences to do what they can to stop it.
Malaria is a devastating disease, killing one million people every year, most of them less than five years old. In Africa, malaria kills a child every thirty seconds: but it doesn't have to be that way. For just $10, a life-saving bed net can protect two sleeping children from the deadly bite of a malarial mosquito.
G. Love considers a concert as the ideal venue in which to promote collective action—as people are able to come together to expand their musical horizons, so too can they come together to end the 3,000 needless deaths that occur every day. By joining forces, concert-goers can make more than music; they have the ability to effect change and save lives.
To encourage fans to take up the cause, G. Love is offering tickets and backstage passes for his Portland (Sept. 6th) and Seattle (Sept. 7th) shows to fans who donate online to Malaria No More. The winner will be picked at random from those who donate to Malaria No More through the special G. Love website and will be allowed to bring a guest backstage after the concert to meet with G. Love. Donations should be made online at www.malarianomore.org/glove.
As in Boston, Philadelphia and Atlanta, volunteers will be on hand at his Northwest shows to distribute educational materials on malaria, and answer questions about how to get involved. Fans in attendance will also be given the opportunity to make contributions to Malaria No More via text during the shows.
"Malaria is a massive global health problem that doesn't get enough attention. The more I learn about it, the more I want to raise awareness and I hope my audiences will become as passionate about it as I am," said G. Love. "The fact that kids in Africa are dying of a preventable disease is simply unacceptable."
