Big Picture

With the support of Malaria No More, the Clinton Foundation and UNICEF, Botswana conducted a mass long lasting insecticide treated net distribution pilot campaign in its own Okavango district. This pilot aimed to prove the effectiveness and efficacy of a new proposed model for mosquito net distribution using existing extensive infrastructure for indoor residual spraying. Malaria No More provided funding for all 32,000 nets required to conduct this pilot. The Botswana Government, Clinton Foundation and UNICEF worked together to distribute the nets

Results

The pilot project was successful in quickly scaling up LLIN ownership in Okavango from 9.4% of households owning at least one ITN in 2007 to 91% owning at least one ITN in 2009. Read the full report on key findings below.

UPDATE: Malaria No More has partnered with Malaria No More UK on our first joint investment to extend Botswana's impact in its fight against malaria. This investment will extend the impact of our pilot project by supplying additional nets and education, evaluate the success of the pilot to inform Botswana's and Africa's strategies to fight malaria, and integrate a mobile-phone reporting program to track malaria cases and aggressively tackle the disease.
