Why Support Malaria No More

A contribution to Malaria No More is an investment in our bold but achievable goal: to cover everyone at risk of malaria in Africa with a mosquito net and to sustainably end malaria deaths in Africa by 2015.

Why Malaria?

Malaria kills more children in Africa than any other single disease — one child every 45 seconds — but it doesn't have to be this way. Malaria is preventable and treatable.

Why Now?

Thanks to a new generation of effective nets and medicines, plus on-the-ground successes, increased political will in Africa and significant new global funding commitments, the world is better positioned to defeat this deadly disease today than any other time in history. Malaria's moment is now!

Why Us?

Malaria No More is making life-saving investments in the form of mosquito nets and innovative malaria education campaigns in Africa. In the United States, we are engaging the public through groundbreaking awareness campaigns and rallying political leadership to continue their crucial support of the malaria fight.

What are the Benefits of Investing in Anti-Malaria Efforts?

Ending malaria will make a huge difference in the lives of families, communities and entire countries. An investment in malaria control in Africa produces tangible and impressive results. For example, malaria deaths dropped by more than 10% from 2008 to 2009 in Africa — a huge improvement in a single year. In addition, 11 African countries have reduced malaria deaths by more than 50% in the past 10 years.

Malaria is a preventable and treatable disease. By providing necessary tools and ensuring that they're used correctly, one million lives a year can be saved. An end to severe malaria will free up vital resources to address other health and development issues in Africa. Removing malaria as an obstacle to productivity will spur economic growth and help reduce poverty.

What Has Malaria No More Accomplished?

Since its founding in December 2006, Malaria No More has undertaken key initiatives to raise awareness and promote malaria control:

  • We have distributed 2.7 million mosquito nets to families in 13 African countries to cover over 5,000,000 people.
  • We educated more than 40 million Americans with through our involvement in three American Idol special “Idol Gives Back” charity programs and with the support of celebrities including Will Smith, Jordin Sparks, Kiefer Sutherland, Forest Whitaker and others.
  • We partnered with some of the biggest names in Africa – President Jakaya Kikwete of Tanzania and Youssou Ndour of Senegal – to launch innovative social mobilization campaigns in Tanzania and Senegal, changing the way Africa communicates about malaria.
  • We also helped launch NightWatch, a groundbreaking nightly mosquito net reminder campaign that leverages media, African celebrity, and corporate partnerships to encourage mosquito net use. The platform successfully launched in Senegal and is now rolling out in Cameroon and Chad.
  • We were instrumental in setting the 2010 universal bed net coverage target, embraced by the full malaria community.
  • The Malaria No More Policy Center, the only group in Washington DC committed exclusively to malaria, launched in January 2008 to support effective malaria policies on Capitol Hill.
  • We worked with governments in the U.S. and the U.K. to secure a 100 million mosquito net commitment from the G8 during their 2008 Summit.
  • And much more! For a full briefing of our activities, see our 2010 Stakeholder Report.
