Statement From Malaria No More on the Nomination of ExxonMobil CEO Rex Tillerson for U.S. Secretary

As CEO of ExxonMobil, Rex Tillerson has been instrumental in supporting Malaria No More’s work in several African countries, including Cameroon, Chad, Nigeria, Senegal and Tanzania.  In Cameroon alone, the ExxonMobil Foundation has helped us reach more than 6 million people with lifesaving messages and increase the number of people sleeping under bed nets by 700,000.

Malaria No More looks forward to continuing to work with Mr. Tillerson, if confirmed, to further advance American leadership in the fight against malaria.

Thanks to bipartisan support in Congress and across the last two administrations, remarkable progress has been made to end this deadly disease. More than 6 million lives have been saved since 2000, and mortality rates have declined by 62 percent globally between 2000 and 2015. Yet many significant challenges remain. In 2015, there were more than 212 million new malaria cases and 429,000 malaria-related deaths worldwide.

In 2015, Malaria No More honored Mr. Tillerson for ExxonMobil’s commitment to the malaria fight, along with President George W. Bush, Congresswoman Kay Granger and Tom Falk, CEO of Kimberly-Clark, for their leadership on ending this preventable disease.
