Washington, D.C., March 28, 2022— Malaria No More CEO Martin Edlund issued the following statement upon the release of the Biden Administration’s FY23 budget request:
Malaria No More applauds the Biden Administration’s $2 billion request for the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. This historic investment will save millions of lives, delivering on the Administration’s commitment as host of this year’s 7th replenishment conference and signaling to the rest of the world that now is the time to step up the fight to fully fund the Global Fund at $18 billion over the next 3 years.
While we welcome the Administration’s continued commitment to support increases to the U.S. President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI), the proposed $780 million falls significantly short of the $1 billion needed in FY23 to scale frontline testing and treatment, expand the capacity of community health workers, and save an additional 4 million lives from malaria over the next 5 years.
We look forward to working with Congress to right-size the appropriation for PMI and secure $2 billion for the Global Fund over the coming months.
