December 4, 2025 (Washington, DC) — Malaria No More CEO Martin Edlund issued the following statement upon the release of the World Health Organization’s (WHO) 2025 World Malaria Report, which includes data available through 2024:

The latest World Malaria Report makes clear that the stakes have never been higher. Breakthrough malaria tools are emerging at the very moment that cases are rising and a deepening resource gap threatens to reverse progress.

In 2024 alone, global malaria efforts saved one million lives and averted 170 million cases. And proven tools — from seasonal malaria chemoprevention (SMC) to new vaccines and next-generation nets — protected hundreds of millions more children and families across Africa. These gains show what’s possible when commitment meets innovation.

But the report also highlights a sobering truth: malaria is regaining ground. Despite global efforts, malaria cases climbed to 282 million last year. Threats like rising antimalarial drug resistance, global conflict, and a growing resource gap threaten to erode hard-won advances and fuel malaria’s deadly resurgence.

We cannot afford further backsliding. Now is the time to double down, to fund what we know works, speed innovations that will shape the next decade of impact, and sustain the political commitment necessary to end needless deaths. With the right resources and momentum, we can build a world where no one dies from a mosquito bite.
