Washington, D.C. — Dr. William (Bill) Steiger, Chief Executive Officer of Malaria No More, issued the following statement upon the passing of former Congresswoman Kay Granger (R-TX):
We are saddened by the passing of former Congresswoman Kay Granger, a steadfast champion for American investment in global health — including life-saving malaria programs — as both a member and Chair of the House Committee on Appropriations and its Subcommittee on National Security, the Department of State, and Related Programs.
Malaria No More recognized Congresswoman Granger with our annual Malaria Vision Award in 2015 for her leadership on malaria and support for the U.S. President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI). We again honored her in 2019 as a part of a campaign to celebrate women in the fight against malaria.
Accepting the Malaria Vision Award in 2015, Congresswoman Granger spoke of her pride in American efforts to end malaria, saying: “Children today are surviving with the help of anti-malarial treatments, when just a decade ago their chances of dying after being bitten by a malaria-infected mosquito were tragically high.”
Today, U.S. leadership through PMI and the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria has helped prevent more than two billion cases of malaria and saved 14 million lives, most of them young children in Africa. This is a legacy of which every American should be proud, made possible with the Congresswoman’s support.
