Seattle, 31 August, 2018 – Malaria No More commends the establishment of the new Sahel Malaria Elimination Initiative. With some 90 million people at risk for malaria in the Sahel sub-region of Africa, the Initiative will scale up and sustain universal access to anti-malarial drugs and secure new financing towards malaria programs in eight countries—Burkina Faso, Cabo Verde, Chad, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Senegal and The Gambia. It also will ensure greater accountability and deploy new technologies to combat malaria.
“The Sahel Malaria Elimination Initiative is a positive step that will accelerate progress towards eliminating malaria in the region,” said Martin Edlund, CEO of Malaria No More. “Cross-border collaboration builds off similar initiatives and are critical to achieving the goal of ending malaria within a generation.”
The Initiative is supported by the region’s health ministers and partners including the World Health Organization, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the African Leaders Malaria Alliance (ALMA) and the RBM Partnership to End Malaria, of which Malaria No More is a partner.
