Washington D.C., June 5, 2019 – The malaria community has lost a tremendous champion in the fight against malaria. Senator Thad Cochran believed in the effort to end deaths from malaria, and his support contributed to saving millions of lives across the globe.
“We are saddened to learn of the passing of Senator Cochran, a staunch champion over the years in the malaria fight. We know his legacy continues to live on in the millions of lives that Senator Cochran fought to protect from malaria,” said Josh Blumenfeld, Managing Director for Global Policy and Advocacy, Malaria No More.
Senator Cochran’s support for malaria funding in the U.S. has contributed to the reduction of malaria deaths by 60% and malaria cases by 37%, saving seven million lives and preventing more than one billion cases, since 2000. His support has not only helped to save lives, but also to protect the American warfighter from malaria while serving overseas.
