Why It Matters

BECAUSE WE CAN WIN THE FIGHT

Malaria is one of oldest and deadliest diseases, devastating families, communities, and countries. Yet we have the tools to end malaria in a generation. This is why we are putting all our energy into making malaria no more.

BECAUSE ENDING MALARIA SAVES LIVES AND HELPS STOP THE CYCLE OF POVERTY

Increasing investments to end malaria will save millions more lives, mostly pregnant women and children in Africa. However, despite tremendous progress, malaria remains one of the top killers of children under five and is a major cause of poverty and inequity in Africa.

  • In 2020, malaria claimed 627,000 lives and caused 241 million cases.
  • Malaria accounts for half of missed days in African schools. Healthy children can go to school and learn more effectively, ultimately impacting their ability to earn a living.
  • Keeping children healthy enables parents to go to work and reduce the need to spend their wages on malaria treatments and health care.

BECAUSE ENDING MALARIA STIMULATES ECONOMIES

Malaria keeps families and communities from prospering. By sustaining investments in ending malaria and improving health, we can unlock economic growth and human potential.

  • Malaria-free countries have 5x greater economic growth than countries with malaria.
  • A 10% decrease in malaria has been associated with a .3% rise in GDP.
  • Every $1 invested in malaria control in Africa returns $40 in economic growth, contributing to Africa’s prosperity and its prospects as a trading partner.

BECAUSE ENDING MALARIA HELPS KEEP US SAFER AND HEALTHIER

Malaria research is developing next generation tools and strategies to help fight Zika, dengue, and other mosquito-borne diseases and to prevent epidemics.

  • Surveillance and response systems can identify and track transmission of other fast-moving infectious diseases.
  • Rapid diagnostics and better treatments address the growing threat of resistance to anti-malarial drugs and insecticides.
  • Health care workers trained to diagnose and treat malaria also fight other diseases and can respond quickly to an emerging epidemic.

THE END OF MALARIA STARTS WITH YOU.
LET'S BE THE GENERATION TO END THIS DISEASE.

Your contribution will help us ensure that no one dies from a mosquito bite.
