Director, Donor Engagement

Malaria No More’s Development team leads the strategy and implementation of MNM’s global fundraising efforts, with a focus on building strong relationships with foundations, corporations, and individual philanthropists. We strive to educate and motivate our supporters, to make them feel a part of our common mission, and to help find ways for them to play their own distinct part in ending malaria forever. We conduct engaging outreach activities to keep our donor base informed, we hold impactful events to reenergize our supporters, and we continuously improve our efforts to inspire new support from others, for our life-saving mission.

The Director, Donor Engagement will work closely with the Managing Director, Strategy & Growth and the rest of MNM’s leadership team to design a dynamic and multifaceted strategy for philanthropic fundraising, in support MNM’s ambitious growth goals over the next five years and to support the organization’s ongoing ability to innovate in pursuit of our mission to end malaria. They will challenge the organization to reimagine the way we engage with a broad range of existing and prospective donors, working closely with our internal communications and program teams to develop moving and compelling campaigns, plan unique and impactful events and experiences, attract and retain effective champions and networks, and successfully navigate unconventional channels to reach major new sources of financial support for our work. The Director, Donor Engagement will also be expected to develop, refine and institutionalize practical processes and team coordination to ensure efficient identification, cultivation, proposal development, and ongoing stewardship of our growing network of donors and champions. The successful candidate will be an ambitious fundraiser and bring an entrepreneurial spirit and high degree of professionalism to the Malaria No More team. They are a passionate and creative professional with highly developed writing and presentation, client relationship building, opportunity identification, and project management skills. Ideally, the applicant will bring relevant experience building resonant messages, compelling platforms, and cohesive development systems for a similarly sized organization in the global health or international development sectors.

Travel Requirement: Up to 25% domestic travel

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Build and curate a portfolio of prospective individual, corporate, and foundation donors, through research, targeted messaging, and coordinated outreach through Malaria No More's leadership, board members, and other core donors.
  • Understand engagement opportunities, advance communication channels, work across Malaria No More teams to identify specific appeals and funding opportunities, create targeted and tailored outreach materials, and prepare proposals for new and existing supporters.
  • Design and launch a new Malaria No More giving society, or other approach to recognize and appreciate major donors, build a cohesive community of like-minded champions for malaria elimination, and create opportunities for peer-to-peer exchange and fellowship.
  • Support leadership and board members by organizing and facilitating opportunities for quality engagement with current and prospective donors, including smaller regional events and gatherings, webinars or other opportunities to learn, and tours to the malaria-affected world.
  • Organize and execute meaningful large events that attract and inspire corporate and foundation supporters and provide high profile opportunity to promote our cause via media channels.
  • Lead an annual renewal strategy for current donors, develop creative new fundraising campaigns, execute direct mailing efforts, and ensure social media and other communication channels are fully utilized.
  • Pursue an experimental donor acquisition strategy, via advertising and other means of communication with a larger but targeted audience, to determine how Malaria No More can best communicate its core value proposition relative to the important humanist cause we are driving.
  • Work effectively with other MNM teams to ensure programmatic work is reflected appropriately in fundraising materials, and to support programmatic partnership development.
  • Oversee the maintenance and enhanced utilization of fundraising tools and internal knowledge management systems; oversee benchmarking and other development performance analytics and contribute to broad social media presence.

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required and Master’s preferred in a relevant field
  • 7-10 years of experience in a senior development role for a nonprofit organization, including donor engagement and stewardship.
  • A strategic thinker with a deep understanding of the nonprofit and philanthropic landscape, and the role of a loyal donor base in sustaining an organization like Malaria No More.
  • Solid experience creating the mechanisms and platforms needed to develop and retain strong relationships and ensure effective stewardship of philanthropic gifts.
  • The skills and confidence needed to effectively represent Malaria No More in external settings, conduct individual outreach, and exercise professionalism and discretion in all dealings with donors.
  • Passion for social impact, and enthusiasm for Malaria No More's mission to end one of the world's oldest and deadliest diseases within a generation.
  • Demonstrated track record of collaboration, innovation, and creativity, and well versed in donor relations, fundraising principles, and stewardship best practices.
  • Excellent writing skills and first-hand experience with developing donor correspondence, marketing and stewardship emails, concept notes, marketing materials, and proposals.
  • Skills and experience in project and event management, both in-person and virtual.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage complex, multi-phase projects from inception to completion.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills with ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively with colleagues.
  • Ability and willingness to manage simultaneous assignments while adapting to changing deadlines, priorities, and workflows.
  • Experience with Customer Relationship Management (CRM) platforms.



MNM offers a competitive compensation package based upon previous experience. This is a full-time, exempt role and is eligible for MNM’s comprehensive benefits package, including high-quality medical/dental/vision coverage, 20 vacation days, 10 sick days, 14 paid holidays, summer Friday flex time and paid parental leave, medical/dependent care/commuter FSAs, short- and long-term disability and life insurance, and a 401K plan with an employer safe harbor contribution.
