Washington, DC, May 8, 2023 – Malaria No More and The Wilson Center today announced a collaborative initiative aimed at reinvigorating U.S. support for pivotal malaria programs, including the U.S. President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI) and the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, as well as the innovative work led by the National Institutes of Health, Department of Defense, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
This collaborative effort will include engagements with senior policymakers as well as policy-focused media products and briefing materials that call attention to critical adjacencies in the fight against malaria, including the role of innovation and emerging technologies, global health infrastructure, and community health workers. The initiative will also seek to increase awareness of the impact that global forces such as climate change, the COVID-19 pandemic, great power competition, and interlocking humanitarian crises have on the fight against malaria.
Thanks to ongoing support from the U.S., malaria control and elimination efforts have saved 11.7 million lives globally, yet nearly half the world remains at risk of contracting malaria. There were 247 million malaria cases and 619,000 deaths in 2021.
“The Wilson Center is proud to partner with Malaria No More to highlight the incredible role the U.S. plays in strengthening global health systems,” said Ambassador Mark A. Green, President, and CEO of the Wilson Center. “Our regional expertise coupled with our understanding of trends in science, technology, and global health, offer not only a nonpartisan voice on health issues but an opportunity to keep the global health drumbeat alive and salient through so much noise that surrounds Washington.”
“This collaboration with the Wilson Center couldn’t come at a more critical time, as the past 15 years have proven the incredible impact US leadership can have on global health - with malaria emerging as one its best investments in global health and a rare bipartisan success story,” said Martin Edlund, CEO of Malaria No More. “Now, with transformational new tools on the horizon, we have an historic opportunity to finish the job by ending humanity’s oldest, deadliest disease once and for all."
“We look forward to collaborating with the Wilson Center to not only share the incredible U.S. success stories in global health diplomacy, but to also reveal the potential of what is to come,” said Sohini Chatterjee, Managing Director, Global Policy & Advocacy at Malaria No More. “While the latest challenges in achieving malaria elimination are daunting, including insecticide resistance, global warming and limited health budgets, new tools and technologies on the horizon offer endless potential. We need to recruit, engage, and inspire the next generation of champions to make the next 15 years, the last 15 years for malaria.”
